From Reims to Verdun and back
A bit more from Reims...
It is indeed quite lovely at its center. Wide, pedestrian-only walking areas with fountains and monuments.
There was even the classic French dude on an accordion.
This was a storefront - I was not expecting to get stepped on.
Our dinner one night was a favorite - moules frites (mussels with fries). You had about 8 or more options, but we went with the local favorite of a champagne cream sauce. And a good bottle of wine.
Another shot of Norte Dame de Reims from afar - no traffic at 6 am.
Great public transit - quiet and efficient.
We rented a car and headed to Verdun (arriving much faster than if I had been driving). The first stop was so cheesy that I have no photos. This is the Verdun Ossuary, where many soldiers are buried.
The windows were orange-ish, and it gave an organize glow to the entire hall. Every stone had a name on it.
What you encounter outside the Ossuary
Just across the river from our lunch spot
At some point, Vicki said she really wanted to see the battlefield itself. She got the location and off we went, driving down smaller and smaller roads, and we eventually ended up on a dirt road. This is where we were when the phone told us we had arrived. In all four directions.
